Taking my skills to a new level!

by Tom Rankin CSCS, GCFP

In the martial arts, there are outside students and inside students. The outside students are those who sign up and pay for regular classes. Inside students are specially chosen by the sensei for more advanced training and instruction. This creates the next generation of master teachers and keeps the linage strong. For me, Mia Segal’s Advance Course for Practitioners is like being an inside student for our method. In the convenience of my own home, I was able to learn at the feet of a master. Having Mia personally guide and coach me in movement, took my ATM skills to a level I never dreamed possible. Watching student demos allowed me see through Mia’s eyes. I can now clearly see movement patterns, notice their differences and create unique learning experiences for my students. I felt free to ask any question and benefited from hearing Mia’s wisdom and insights. This is unlike any other advanced training, so come inside and learn how to be your best as a practitioner and a person.

Refining my pilates practice!

by Sally Leabhart

There are numerous ways in which Mia's Mentoring Courses have informed my Pilates practice. Here is just one: A revised response when encountering what seems to be an obstacle to a particular movement or movement sequence within the Pilates repertoire. Questions of "tight this or that"? Of challenges to balance? Of suggestions of misalignment here or there? Cherish that supposed "stopping place" (I hear Mia's voice: "Who or what made you stop there?") as the very site where learning and multiple options (of thought and of movement) can unfold. Consider options other than "girding up your loins" or "blasting through." What "thought options" do we have well beyond a certain ilk of "energizing the core"? Or working things out in a logical biomechanical way? Or staying present with our ever-changing movement progression, moment by moment? Without denying logical biomechanical function or the value of being present in the moment - let’s keep those! - more and other thought options exist. Other goals, other priorities can exist. An unfamiliar way of thinking and proceeding can exist. And "simpler is better" need not be in contradiction to a proliferation of options. The principle is simple; the discoveries and changes are many. Sleuth out the easier path(s) (that were always there, though unconsidered) and they will spread to include one(s) that seemed closed. Consider that what seems the most direct path in a particular exercise (Roll Down? Stomach Massage Arms Back? Saw? Swan?) might not be the most fruitful. A shift in thought and exploration beyond a particular "choreography" can lead to surprising transformations.

Recovering from injuries!

Rich Manuccia

These convenient online lessons are helping me recover from a difficult neck injury. Doing just a few very simple lessons I began to improve my movement and restore hope. One of the things that Mia said that I recall often is that when I run into pain or difficulty, that point is my teacher. So instead of focusing on the pain and being frustrated, I ask myself what can I do differently? What part of me is not participating in the movement? Can I change direction? Where can I do less? A simple movement can become a rich exploration that improves movement and attitude. Oh Yes! I use that idea in my life. When I am troubled I say that the trouble is my teacher and it is a call to stop, think and create new options instead of just being upset. It helps me remember that I am the boss and responsible for my thinking and acting... something else I learned from Mia!
